eBay UK reduce Buyer Protection fees

Category: eBay News
eBay UK reduce Buyer Protection fees

eBay has made big changes to the experience for buyers and sellers over the last nine months, removing fees to sell last year and introducing Buyer Protection earlier this year. They are now reducing Buyer Protection fees and increasing the speed of payouts. This news largely impacts private sellers rather than businesses.

eBay have been continuing to listen to what customers need over the past months, and the changes being announced – reduced Buyer Protection fees (especially on low-value items) and faster access to funds for private sellers – are the latest in a series of improvements to transform the eBay experience in the UK. With more buyers and listings now on site, eBay is continuing to invest in building a more trusted, seamless marketplace for millions of customers.

eBay buyer protection fees

eBay is reducing the fixed portion of the Buyer Protection fee on all items (excluding cars, motorcycles and vehicles, classified ads and property) from £0.75 to £0.10.

Old fees

Active Auctions and Offers that were initiated before the price change will be subject to the old pricing for the duration of the Auction or Offer.

  • A flat fee of up to £0.75 per item, and
  • 4% of the item price up to £300, and
  • 2% of any portion of the item price from £300 to £4,000

New fees

  • A flat fee of £0.10 per item
  • 7% of the item price up to £20
  • 4% of any portion of the item price from £20 to £300
  • 2% of any portion of the item price from £300 to £4,000
  • No fee for the portion of the item price over £4,000

The greatest impact will be on items priced £10 or less, which means lower-priced items will become even more appealing to buyers.

£5 Example

Old Fees – £0.20 + £0.75 = £0.95

New Fees – £0.35 + £0.10 = £0.45

£20 item example

Old Fees – £0.80 + £0.75 = £1.55

New Fees – £1.40 + £0.10 = £1.50

Buyers still pay the fee and it’s included in the item price, so there’s no surprises at checkout.

A live calculator is coming soon, where you’ll be able to enter a price and see the Buyer Protection fee in real-time, so you’ll know exactly what your buyers will pay. When making or reviewing offers, you’ll also see the fee split out from the total item price.

Faster payouts within 24 hours

From the 6th of August, eBay is introducing faster payments for more experienced sellers who meet a set of criteria. Rather than waiting until after delivery is confirmed, eligible sellers will now receive their funds within 24 hours of a sale.

To qualify, sellers need to have:

  • Completed at least 10 sales totalling £150 or more within the last five years
  • No more than two unresolved cases in the last 12 months

Until then, you’ll receive your funds after the item is delivered. Once you’ve met the criteria, eBay will notify you through the eBay app. From the 8th of August, you’ll be able to track your progress in the Payments tab on My eBay.

As always, customers will be supported by eBay’s existing Money Back Guarantee and Authenticity Guarantee on eligible items, helping to maintain a secure and thriving marketplace.
