It’s been revealed that Gumtree selected Mangopay to power its transformation from a traditional classifieds site into a fully transactional C2C marketplace.
Gumtree’s move into the marketplace space is really interesting and long overdue. It also signifies the entire break with the eBay family since the platform was sold to Adevinta half a decade ago and then moved into private equity ownership.
While part of the eBay/PayPal family, they were pretty much banned from doing anything marketplace related and restricted to being a classified ads site, but now they’re free to become a marketplace and haven’t even chosen PayPal, also formerly owned by eBay, for payments, instead opting for Mangopay.
With 10 million monthly visitors and nearly 2 million active listings, Gumtree will start rolling out wallet-first payments in selected categories, ahead of a wider launch in 2026. Watch this marketplace closely as their private equity owners will be keen to push ahead to further monetise the site.
Gumtree has helped millions of consumers to extend product lifecycles, reduce waste, and access affordable alternatives over the last 25 years. Mangopay’s payment solution joins this mission by enabling Gumtree’s users to pay and receive funds directly on-platform, replacing offline transactions and creating a seamless, secure experience.
Gumtree has selected Mangopay for its wallet-first payments infrastructure and re-spend functionality, which enables sellers to instantly reuse their earnings to buy other items. Mangopay’s wallet-first approach has driven over EUR 10 billion in annual re-spend volume across Mangopay’s ecosystem alone, illustrating how wallet-based payments are a powerful engine for increased engagement, loyalty, and transaction volume.
By integrating Mangopay’s white-label wallet infrastructure, Gumtree gains full control over payment flows while offering users a safer, smoother user experience. The move from offline cash payments to on-platform transactions gives more confidence and convenience to buyers and sellers alike. This transformation positions Gumtree for sustainable growth and a richer, more connected community.
Partnering with Mangopay marks a key step in our transition to become a fully transactional C2C marketplace for the home, where transactions are effortless and secure. Their advanced payment infrastructure and expertise provide the foundation we need to build greater trust with our users and grow our community of buyers and sellers.
