Google Cloud building three underwater cables to compete with Amazon

Google has plans to build three underwater cables by next year with the aim of taking the Google Cloud service to new regions and increase its market share in the growing and profitably cloud sector. Amazon Web Services is currently the market leader and AWS drives a great deal of revenue for the ecommerce giant

One cable will connect Chile to Los Angeles across the pacific, the second is being laid in conjunction with Facebook and will connect the United States to Denmark and Ireland. The third will run from Hong Kong to Guam across the Philippines sea.

The new regions served by Google Cloud will be Netherlands and Montreal opening this year and Los Angeles, Finland, and Hong Kong to follow. This will take Google’s investment in cables to 11. The cables are used to maintain service in an area in case of server malfunctions.

Google Cloud has a long way to grow to compete better with Amazon Web Services. Google Cloud has a 6% cloud services market share in Q3, which is up 76% in the past year. But Google is still in third place to Amazon Web Services with a 32% share and Microsoft Azure, which enjoys 14%. Cloud services are increasingly popular so there’s plenty of demand for Google to plug into.
