There is an Amazon Germany workers strike taking place at two of Amazon‘s German warehouses and with just a week to go before Christmas it’s raised concerns that Christmas gifts might not arrive in time for the big day.
The German news agency dpa has reported that workers in Leipzig (East Germany) and Werne (West Germany) went on strike on Monday morning.
Amazon have 10 warehouses in Bad Hersfeld, Leipzig, Werne, Rheinberg, Graben, Koblenz, Pforzheim, Brieselang, Dortmund and Winsen in Germany. They also fulfil from neighbouring countries including Poland, Slovakia and the Czech republic. Most customers won’t notice any difference as Amazon’s logistics operations are second to none and so product will simply be fulfilled from an alternative location.
Where Amazon merchants may be impacted is if their stock is located in one of the two warehouses impacted by the Amazon Germany workers strike this week and their stock hasn’t been split between multiple locations.
Amazon Germany workers strikes have been taking place regularly over the course of several years since 2013. Amazon workers Christmas strikes are a regular occurrence and one Amazon likely plan for. The main argument is how workers are classified. Unions such as Ver.di want Amazon workers classified as retail workers and claim that they are underpaid. Amazon classify their workers as logistics operatives and claim that their pay scales are above average for that industry.
