Walmart look set to introduce fresh grocery delivery via autonomous cars

Walmart said yesterday that they have launched a new pilot programme that will see fresh grocery delivery via autonomous cargo vans.

The new initiative, which will use Udelv’s a cargo vans is designed to deliver hand-picked fresh food to customer doors. Shoppers in Surprise, Arizona are set to enjoy the benefit’s of the innovation first.

Tom Ward, senior vice president of digital operations at Walmart U.S says that the new roll-out is part of the marketplace’s strategy, which aims to “stay on the cutting edge of grocery delivery.”

We’re still learning – it’s a pilot – but, we want to make sure we stay on the cutting edge of grocery delivery by exploring what’s new and next. We’ve said it before: There’s no telling what innovation the future will bring. But, Walmart is committed to staying on the forefront of change to make getting groceries simple, quick, and easy.”

Walmart have recently explored a few projects with other self-driving companies to understand which technology fits the best when it comes to grocery distribution. While the new launch puts the marketplace in competition with other local supermarkets it doesn’t yet measure up to Amazon Fresh service.
