The UK and EU are both going to put VAT reforms in place during 2021, to simplify compliance obligations and reduce VAT fraud. They will also seek to make online marketplaces liable for the VAT obligations on many transactions of their third-party sellers. These changes will take place in the UK on the 1st of January 2021 and, due to the pandemic slightly delayed, on the 1st of July 2021 in the EU.
Whether you are a seller or marketplace you will need to understand these fundamental reforms to your obligations to avoid extra VAT costs and a bad customer experience.
