Skype have filed papers with the US Securities and Exchange commission with the intention of offering an Initial Public Offering of shares in the company. The number of shares to be made available and the price have yet to be decided, but Skype was valued at $2.75 billion when eBay sold 70% of the company.
Whether eBay will benefit from the IPO or not also remains to be seen, current investors alongside eBay include Silver Lake, Netscape founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz and Skype’s original creators, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Who’s shares will be sold or whether new shares will be created for the IPO will be decided later.
To date eBay has been slated for it’s purchase and sale of Skype, once the shares are publicly traded we’ll at last know what the company is really worth and what eBay’s remaining 30% stake is valued at.
