Online marketplace seller survey results

Webretailer and Feedvisor have published statistics from a survey of marketplace sellers of over 200 retailers showing where the money is made on marketplaces and revealing some trends about online retailers marketplaces.

Andy Geldman, editor at Webretailer has picked out the top ten most interesting statistics, but the most notable for me was that 63% of the retailers surveyed only sell on marketplaces. It demonstrates just how powerful the likes of eBay and Amazon are when it comes to driving sales, but also how fragile these businesses are and how how devastating a changes such as the minimum Amazon referral fees can be to an online trader’s livelihood.

Other notable stats are that four times as many sellers have a million dollar turnover on Amazon compared to eBay and 55% have a profit margin greater than 20% (which means 45% run on sub 20% margins).

29% of online retailers are unhappy with their channel management software solution and an amazing 72% of sellers don’t even have a software management solution in place!
