From the 20th of October Royal Mail will be offering an increased small parcel size with a pricing promotion which will run over the Christmas period and into the new year.
The new size for small parcels will be 45cm x 35cm x 16cm.
Basically Royal Mail have taken the largest dimensions from their previous wide (Length: 45cm, Width: 35cm, Depth: 8cm) and deep (Length: 35cm, Width: 25cm, Depth: 16cm) Small Parcel sizes and combined them into one bigger size.
Royal Mail Small Parcel RatesBetween 20th October 2014 and 18th January 2015 |
||
---|---|---|
Weight |
1st Class |
2nd Class |
1kg | £3.20 | £2.80 |
2kg | £5.45 | £2.80 |
Royal Mail will also be offering a promotional rate of £2.80 for 2nd Class postage for all small parcels. Currently the cost is £2.80 for a small parcel up to 1kg and £3.80 for small parcels between 1kg and 2kg, so basically from 20th October until the 18th of January you’ll be able to post 2kg 2nd Class for the price of a 1kg parcel, a £1 saving per item.
It would be churlish to complain about a discount, but it’s a shame that there are no discounts for 1st Class postage over the same time period. There will be a massive differential between the £2.80 for 2nd class and £5.45 for 1st Class small parcels up to 2kg, which will only lead to sellers offering the slower service to customers.
Personally though… if you can save £2.65 for every 2kg parcel you send in the run up to Christmas that’s going to add up to a gigantic saving compared to the possibility of a couple of defect dings for slow postage.
Thanks to Tamebay reader Rich for spotting the info!

No promo for RM business customers though so ebay business sellers disadvantaged by this.
But what’s new!
Royal Mail know they are losing out to Hermes through the 0-1kg category.
so they are still overpricing us – interesting – look forward to competition extending to european deliveries
It’s also worth noticing that they are also now dropping international large letters and merging that into international small parcels. This represents an increase of almost £2 for sending an item weighing no more than 100g.
