The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA has given Amazon has permission to start testing drones for online deliveries. Amazon have approval for those with a pilot’s licenses to test the unmanned crafts.
The permission comes with some conditions. They must be flown at 400 feet or below and only during daylight hours. Crucially, the drones must remain within sight of the pilot. As it stands that will probably be the ongoing deal breaker that stymies drone delivery.
It’s a leap forward for Amazon though: hitherto operating drones in the US has been illegal for commercial purposes.
It seemed at first that this drone suggestion was a well thought out PR stunt that got blanket coverage when it was revealed around Christmas time the year before last. But now it seems that it’s a genuine aspiration. And don’t forget that we’ll have the chance to see a drone delivery in action this week at #IRX2015.
