Amazon are reviewing their LOVEFiLM tarriffs which will see costs for some customers rise from £2 a month to as much as £11.99 per month.
There is of course an alternative, which is Amazon Prime Video but that’s a streaming service and doesn’t include getting rental DVDs via the post. Current costs for the DVD subscription services are £7.99 a month, or £6.99 for Prime members.
It’s not surprising that Amazon want to hike the fees. £2 per month for unlimited rentals doesn’t even cover the postage costs. In contrast the streaming video service from Amazon costs just £5.99 per month (plus of course you really should have an unmetered Internet connection).
Customers have taken to Twitter in rage at the price hike and it is indeed a pretty steep price hike. In this instance however it doesn’t seem unreasonable that Amazon might want to stop losing money on the service. The people that will be hit hardest are those in rural areas of the country where you still can’t get a decent broadband service.
Amazon have said that “We have recently standardised packages and we believe that LOVEFiLM By Post and Prime Video offer our customers great value“.
