Amazon are pulling out all the stakes to publicise Prime Day which takes place this coming Tuesday the 12th July. There are adverts everywhere, TV and radio spots, advance product promotions and the promise of thousands of deals on the day.
Their latest plug is in conjunction with their Prime Video service where they’re making the most of Clarkson Hammond and May’s newly named The Grand Tour show. They’ve announced today that the show, which is hosted in a travelling giant tent, will host shows in the UK, U.S. and Germany and have opened up a draw to win tickets for the studio audience.
Amazon customers in the UK can enter The Grand Tour Prime Day Prize Draw for a chance to win a trip to attend a studio recording in the UK scheduled to take place in the autumn, including travel, accommodation, £200 spending money and a chance of meeting Jeremy, Richard and James. All you need to do is go to www.amazon.co.uk/GTtickets and complete the online entry form to be in with a chance to win.
Prime Video doesn’t make Amazon any money worth talking about (you can subscribe to video only without being a Prime subscriber), it’s main function in life is to add value to a full Amazon Prime membership making it a compelling proposition that you just can’t live without and once you have a Prime subscription in all likelihood you’ll spend twice as much on Amazon as a customer without Prime. That’s why it was worth them paying a reported £160 million to get the trio of ex Top Gear presenters.
Prime Day is all about getting new Prime subscribers, getting a new subscriber to plump for a 30 day trial, enjoy some free deliveries, watch a few films, shop on Amazon Pantry or get an Amazon Now one hour delivery if the customer is in the catchment area and the chances are that they’ll remain a Prime customer.
For retailers none of this matters. The only thing you need to know is that Amazon are going to attract a ton of shoppers on the 12th July and they’re going to be ready to spend. Even if you’re not involved with Prime Day deals we’re expecting Amazon retailers to benefit from the sheer volumes of traffic on the site.
