Post Office Strikes on 31st October 2016

Post OfficeCrown Post Offices are once again on on strike today. The CWU explains “Post Office members will take strike action in defence of their jobs, pensions and the Great British Post Office”. Unite trade union members who work for the Post Office are also walking out today.

This is the second strike in just two months and there is every probability that further strikes will take place between now and Christmas.

97% of the 11,600 odd Post Offices branches will be open as normal today but it is estimated that about 80 have been forced to close today due to the strikes.

Commenting on the dispute, The Post Office say “The Post Office wants to reach a constructive way forward through talking with our unions. More than 99 per cent of people in the UK live within three miles of a Post Office branch, but we must make changes to safeguard that level of service for future generations. The Post Office is committed to keeping its branches at the heart of communities. But we must also respond to changing customer needs. Over the last four years, we have modernised over 6,500 branches, adding more than 200,000 extra opening hours each week, and becoming the largest UK retail network open on Sundays.”

If you do need to drop your post off today, you can check if your local Post Office will be open on the Post Office strike page/
