If you missed the action at the Silverstone Classic this weekend, it’s not too late to get involved. The Ford Capri that eBay restored over the three days is now up for sale on eBay will all proceeds going to the Silverstone Classic’s charity partner Prostate Cancer UK.
The Capri drew huge crowds to eBay’s garage as attendees of the Silverstone Classic were able to watch as the mechanics worked in full view of the public. While completely original with no aftermarket modifications (bar an alarm for which the wiring had to be traced and removed) and just one owner from new, the Capri’s 85,000 miles on the clock – and barely any time on the road in the last decade – meant it needed a complete overhaul.
The restoration work included a full engine service, stripping out and repairing the front and rear suspension, overhauling the drive train and brakes, repairing bodywork, rust treating and full polish with new iconic orange stripe replaced. Plus the interior was stripped out, deep cleaned and re-fitted along with replacing a cracked dashboard which might sound easy enough until you saw the spaghetti mess of electrical repair work that entailed.

The aim of the challenge was not just to entertain race goers, but to demonstrate the huge breadth of new and used parts available on eBay motors and to position eBay as the first destination to go to when restoring or repairing your own car. The hardest part to source turned out to be the dashboard and in typical eBay fashion, once one had been located, Fergus had to drive to Manchester to collect it as the seller didn’t want to risk it getting damaged in transit. It really was the last Capri dashboard left in the country!

If you’d like to buy the Capri the auction is now live on eBay and finishes at 8pm on Sunday the 6th of August. Make sure you register to bid well before the deadline as the auction is only open to pre-approved bidders. The car will definitely sell as it already has one bid of £9,000.
The winner will be able to collect the car from Chipping Norton after the 14th of August by which time it will have a brand new 12 months MOT and be ready to drive away.
