Amazon Mexico is now the biggest online retailer there

It looks like Amazon Mexico will take the crown in 2017 and become the biggest national online retailer there. But there are keen competitors and the ecommerce journey in Mexico has only just begun.

According to Euromonitor sales will double this year on Amazon in Mexico from $502.2 million in 2017 compared with $243.9 in 2016.

And it’s not just Amazon that’s doing well, MercadoLibre is flourishing in Mexico too and reported to have 90% growth on 2016 with total sales shy of Amazon at $489.2 million.

As it stands ecommerce isn’t particularly big because online sales still only account for just over 3% of all retail sales in Mexico. Barriers to ecommerce include concerns about credit card fraud and delivery problems. But it’s clear that Mexico is a nascent market when it comes to selling online with only good times ahead. Assuming that wall Trump wants doesn’t go ahead.

And don’t forget that if you’re already selling on Amazon.com in the USA, and perhaps also usuing FBA over there, then you can also automatically plug into Amazon in Mexico and Canada using the same account.

Have any of you already had success in Mexico and do you have any tips for those considering the leap into selling to Mexico?
