Amazon have acquired warehouse robotic startup Canvas Technology yesterday in a continual push to “keep inventing for customers.”

Amazon refused to comment on the acquisition’s price tag. However, they said that the companies “share a common vision for the future.” Amazon said that the vision is of a safe working environment which combines human and robotic elements. Amazon said that their work with Canvas Technology’s “fantastic team [is] to keep inventing for customers.”

Canvas was launched in 2015 to develop autonomous systems. In 2018, Canvas introduced an autonomous cart akin to a self-driving car in a warehouse setting.

The deal will bring an extra wave of automation, strengthening Amazon’s robotic offering. However, the impact of this could be dual for merchants. First, it could bring savings for Amazon from automated processes which could translate into cheaper FBA fees for sellers. Second, Amazon might raise their FBA prices as a result of improved delivery services.
