An Amazon new fulfilment centre has been announced last week to launch in Kegworth, East Midlands. Amazon’s new investment aims to enable small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) selling on Amazon to scale their businesses. However, the launch date of the hub is yet to be revealed.
Amazon currently has 17 fulfilment centres in the UK. There are three fulfilment centres in Doncaster and one each in Bolton, Coalville (Leicestershire), Daventry, Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley, Swansea Bay, Tilbury and Warrington.
Kegworth will be the fifth Amazon fulfilment centre in the Midlands and joins facilities in Coalville, Daventry, Rugeley, and Rugby, which will open later this year. The first dedicated UK receive centre opened in Coventry in 2018. It acts as a central hub to receive and sort millions of products sold on Amazon.co.uk each year.
Amazon say they have begun recruiting for more than 500 new staff to join the fulfilment centre. These roles include operations managers, engineers, HR and IT specialists. Amazon say that the number of businesses taking advantage of FBA increased by more than 70% last year. Some half of all units stocked in Amazon’s UK fulfilment centres are FBA products. The move would mean that Amazon would have more fulfilment centres to strategically allocate sellers’ stock. This means that merchants would benefit from their stock being located closer to their customers – meaning faster delivery for shoppers with fewer obstacles.

The Kegworth warehouse is huge. They already do 2 parcel flights a day out of East Midlands, sometimes they have an additional 757 aircraft and all these flights are all full. I’m sure this will increase when the Kegworth FC opens.
East Midlands Airport is the biggest freight airport in the UK and is expanding so makes sense for them to be based there, they generally choose to be near an airport according to the Amazon staff I spoke to.
