UPS Centennial hub expansion to bring one-day delivery to the US

A UPS Centennial hub expansion aims to enable small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to accelerate their delivery promise.

The 1 million sq ft centre can accept packages into UPS’s air operations as late as 1:30 am for delivery across the US the same day. This means SMBs can now start offering their US shoppers a one-day delivery via UPS Next Day Air® service.

The ‘super hub’ is what UPS calls the automated centre because of the increased speed of the package processing capacity, which decreases the delivery time.

The tripled in sized ground sortation and distribution hub, located at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, is designed to deliver products to customers ” when, where and how their customers want”.

It’s strategic proximity to UPS’s Worldport air hub at Louisville International Airport supports end-of-runway express services like UPS Next Day Air® and UPS eFulfillment that many SMBs demand.

UPS say that expansion is part of the company’s focus on building innovative solutions to serve SMBs worldwide. The UPS Centennial hub is part of a multi-year UPS investment plan which aims to modernise and expand the company’s global network, including the addition of several new facilities and acquisition of new cargo aircraft.

The move echos recent announcement of Amazon’s one-day delivery and Walmart’s equivalent.

  1. As a UK based seller, we have been looking for a 3PL partner (Not Amazon) in the US and have just moved to UPS e-fulfilment and its going ok.

Our first orders were dispatched seamlessly with tracking sent to the customer via the marketplace.

Their rates are by far the cheapest, i believe they are disrupting the 3PL offerings in the US.

If you manage to get on the Amazon SFP programme, they are all set up as an Authorised partner.

I’m off to IRCE in Chicago next month and that should give me a good idea on how they are affecting the 3PL market.
