Amazon Climate Pledge to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early

Over 1,000 Amazon employees pledged to walk out of work this week on Friday in support of youths calling for a Global Climate Strike. Amazon have already taken notice announced the Amazon Climate Pledge to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early. Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge with and Global Optimism.

The Climate Pledge calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040 — a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050. Amazon is also pledging to be net zero carbon by 2040, and use 100% renewable energy by 2030, and more.

“We’re done being in the middle of the herd on this issue—we’ve decided to use our size and scale to make a difference. If a company with as much physical infrastructure as Amazon—which delivers more than 10 billion items a year—can meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early, then any company can. I’ve been talking with other CEOs of global companies, and I’m finding a lot of interest in joining the pledge. Large companies signing The Climate Pledge will send an important signal to the market that it’s time to invest in the products and services the signatories will need to meet their commitments.”

Amazon Climate Pledge Goals

• 100% Net zero carbon by 2040

  Deploying their technology and people to reach net zero carbon across Amazon by 2040, one decade ahead of the Paris Agreement.

• Renewable energy by 2024

  Investing in wind and solar to reach 80% renewable energy across all business operations by 2024. We expect to reach ~40% renewable energy by the end of 2019.

• 100% Renewable energy by 2030

  Investing in wind and solar to reach 100% renewable energy across all business operations by 2030.

• 50% Shipments net zero carbon by 2030

  Our vision to make all Amazon shipments net zero carbon, with 50% of all shipments net zero carbon by 2030.
