Yes, seriously, OnBuy will pay two shopaholics £50k a year to buy, review and keep absolutely anything they wish on their marketplace. Thats not all, the successful candidates will receive a £35k salary on top of the spending budget and get to work from home.

Sounds pretty dreamy… until you run out of space for all your new stuff, then again, thats a pretty nice problem to have and you’d soon be forgetting about that problem when the Tax man shows up with your new and much worse problem.

“We’re seeking online die-hard shopaholics to join our friendly and fast-paced team to put our sellers and website experience to the test! You will be paid a competitive salary plus you will be provided with a huge yearly budget to shop ’til you drop on our site. It will be your responsibility to fully spend this budget each year.”

Beware of the shopaholics

The new job advertisement means that sellers on OnBuy need to make sure they are on top of their game because two mysterious shopaholics will be lurking around street corners and could be splashing their free cash on your items!

  1. Mystery shoppers are a good idea, if it returns useful data.

That said, if they have Excellent communication skills and Fluency in English, they’ll stick out like a sore thumb from the usual buyers, so sellers will know they’re being tested.

What you really need to pass for a typical disgruntled buyer is someone who will:

Type with CAPS LOCK ON to make their point.
Provide a half-assed, slightly inaccurate delivery address, then wonder why they have delivery issues.
Use multiple exclamation or question marks at the end of every sentence!!!?
Say the item is not as advertised without reading the listing, which perfectly describes the item.
Say “why should I have to read the listing???” when challenged on the above.
Send a returns query message, then not follow up for weeks, until they can no longer open a returns on the website.
Think estimated delivery means guaranteed delivery by.

I reckon I could do all the above, from many years of dealing with such buyers. But I will also be getting around to putting a store up on the site this year, so there’d be a conflict of interest 🙁

And who knew mystery shoppers got paid that well?

  2. Coolshop marketplace before it shut its doors last year used to to Mystery Shop the merchants.
I got one and my account manager phoned me up with the results (which were all good)…accuracy of lising, speed of delivery etc etc…it helped keep the dodgers of the site.
I thought it was a good idea and something the likes of eBay and Amazon should do (they could afford it) instead of just having more metrics, one glove fits all, plus it may result in their marketplaces being SAFER places to buy from and help cut back on the torrent of fakes etc.

  3. I think for most On Buy sellers an extra two orders from these two would double their all-time sales on the platform.

Amazon do a similar thing, I’ve seen orders to a particular department at Principal Place.
