PayPal have rolled out the ability to use PayPal QR Codes to buy and sell goods in the UK and 27 markets around the globe. From local takeaway coffee shops to selling second-hand goods – the rollout of the QR code functionality in the PayPal app allows customers to buy or sell in in-person, safely and securely, and touch free. From paying for Zoom yoga classes and tipping food delivery drivers, through to cash-payment heavy industries such as window cleaners, the launch is set to benefit millions of consumers and businesses in the UK.
PayPal QR Codes offer businesses an easy way to take payment remotely and safely, avoiding the need to handle cash and share personal data, such as bank details, to receive payment. This method supports ongoing social distancing requirements, eliminating any contact with in-person checkout technology.
Consumers simply need a mobile phone and a PayPal account to get started. Once the QR code is scanned, they are directed to PayPal and will only need to enter the amount to pay, select the funding source and complete the payment.
No fees for payments via PayPal QR Codes until September
The introduction of QR Codes is just one of the ways PayPal is supporting businesses to continue practicing smoothly, flexibly and safely at this uncertain time. PayPal is also waiving standard seller transaction fees incurred for sales conducted using a QR Code, until 13th September.

Safely buying and selling with PayPal QR Codes
Using the QR code functionality in the PayPal app is a quick and safe way to complete a transaction in-person utilising a PayPal wallet, eliminating the need to handle cash. For example, customers who are selling items in-person at local coffee shop can print a QR code, place it on their table and have their consumers simply scan, enter the amount they’re paying and send money immediately. This allows the seller to minimise physical interactions with the customer, while also limiting the customer’s interaction with checkout technology. There is no technology to touch or purchase – just aim a smartphone camera at a QR Code that is printed or present on another screen.
For a buyer looking to pay, customers can go to the PayPal app, click ‘Send’ and tap the QR code symbol in the top right-hand corner. The camera will open and customers can scan a seller’s QR code and follow the prompts to complete the transaction. Sellers can create a PayPal-generated QR code by following the steps outlined here.
