Amazon have announced that they are adding 1,800 electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans to its delivery fleet in Europe. This move comes as Mercedes-Benz joins The Climate Pledge and shows both companies’ commitments to reducing emissions from the transportation sector.

“We welcome the bold leadership demonstrated by Mercedes-Benz by signing up to The Climate Pledge and committing to ambitious action to address climate change. We need continued innovation and partnership from auto manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz to decarbonize the transportation sector and tackle the climate crisis.”
– Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO, Amazon

Amazon’s Delivery Service Partners will have access to the new delivery fleet of EV’s this year, helping to save thousands of metric tons of carbon. This is also the largest order of EV’s Mercedes-Benz have had and 1,200 of the vehicles will be the larger eSprinter, the latest electric commercial van available from Mercedes-Benz. The eSprinter includes the latest safety features and will be delivered alongside 600 of their smaller eVito vehicles to provide a smaller zero-emissions delivery vehicle for where needed.

“Amazon’s investment is a strong and concrete sign of its commitment and alignment to EU priorities. Amazon continues to contribute to the achievement of the EU Green Deal goals, foster technological innovation and generate resilient and sustainable jobs in Europe. I hope that other corporations will follow Amazon’s example in the near future.”
– Fabio Massimo Castaldo, vice president at the European Parliament

Amazon still see sustainability as one of their top priorities despite COVID-19 and have made significant progress with The Climate Pledge thanks to key initiatives and the dedication of thousands of employees in various teams across Amazon. In the midst of all the drama from the current pandemic, it’s important that companies remain focused on sustainability campaigns, in many ways, the current events have provided a push in the right direction and will continue to promote the rapid advance in technology that will assist it.
