US Amazon Prime customers now get free unlimited photo storage

Today Stateside, Amazon introduced Prime Photos, the newest benefit for Prime members, which provides free unlimited photo storage in Amazon Cloud Drive.

Amazon Prime is the premium subscription for Amazon customers that offers free next-day delivery plus other perks.

Prime Photos enables Prime members to:

– Upload photos from iOS and Android devices, Fire tablets and Fire phone, and Mac and Windows computers—and have them stored for free in the Amazon cloud.
– Access photo collections at any time from nearly any device—including the big screen using Amazon Fire TV or the newly announced Fire TV Stick, as well as PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and select LG and Samsung smart TVs.
– Add photos to Cloud Drive in their original version so customers never have to worry about losing the full resolution image.

“This time of year in particular, families are capturing thousands of photos of holiday parties, family gatherings and opening presents,” said Greg Greeley, Vice President Amazon Prime. “With free unlimited photo storage, we’re providing one more reason for members to use Prime every day. Prime has always allowed members to conveniently save time and save money, and now with Prime Photos they can save memories too.”

You can read the full release here. I’m a Prime customer (my subscription expires soon). I always thought it rather a bargain at £49. Now I’ll need to renew at £79, I’m considering my options. I do value the Amazon Prime Video service but I’m not sure this Photo service adds much to the proposition. That said, if they have it Stateside, we should enjoy the perk over here too.

  1. I find I get less and less delivered via Amazon Prime, the exceptions list seems to be getting ever longer. also – it does not always meet the next day delivery target. As for “free downloads” many on the Amazon library list don’t seem to be eligible. In any case I have only downloaded one film and one TV prog, so I’ll be ditching “Prime” before the renewal rate.

The problem with taking up this offer, is that I’ll be obliged to stick with Amazon Prime thereafter.

I find Amazon useful, but I already rely on Amazon for too much – and just don’t find Prime worthwhile.

  2. I’m waiting for the day that the masses take control of their own data and invest in their own NAS, and forget 3rd party companies. It will happen!
