"Entire towns" go phishing, says eBay

No primary category set

eBay have criticised law enforcement agencies in Romania for not doing more to stop phishing. Mark Lee, trust and safety manager for eBay UK, [where’s Rambo?!] said that there “no fear of real punishment” for internet scammers in countries like Romania, Russia and China; “there are towns in Romania where the entire focus is on sites like eBay as the main source of income.”

Last year, eBay in partnership with law enforcement agencies, ran a campaign to catch Romanian phishers. As many of the country’s policing resources are concentrated in the capital Bucharest, they found backlogs of up to 200 eBay fraud-related cases in some smaller towns. And, as the Times reported, when eBay scamming is the town’s principal industry, there’s little incentive to close it down.

  1. At lease Ebay have identified the “enemy” now, which is a step forward.

How to deal with that enemy is now the big question 🙂

  2. I think that’s the point, Blighty Mark – these guys are good. And I guess for one thing, Classic Mark, they need something as profitable to do. If I were eBay, I’d employ Vladuz and friends as security consultants.

  3. Indonesia has been at it since ebay started
its not safe to deal there yet , cant see how they are going to easily stop Roumania
