Amazon August Bank Holiday Sale starts Wednesday

No primary category set

Amazon have announced an August Bank Holiday Sale which will run from 00:01 on Wednesday the 22nd until 23:59 on Wednesday 29th the of August at amazon.co.uk/augustsale. They are billing it as “eight days of deals with great savings on everything you need to enjoy the last weeks of summer and get ready to go back to school or university”. Deals will be organised by themes, from ‘Garden Clean Up’ and ‘Festival Fun’ to ‘Last of the Summer’ and ‘Off to University’.

There will be a range of new ‘Deals of the Day’ available every day throughout the event, from electronics and gadgets to homewares, garden supplies and the best in back to school clothing. Additionally, ‘Lightning Deals’ – products available at a discount, in limited quantities, for a short period of time – introduced throughout the sale, with new deals becoming available as often as every five minutes. As always, Amazon Prime members, including customers enjoying a free Amazon Prime 30-day trial, will have an exclusive 30-minute early access period to all Lightning Deals.

Amazon say that small businesses and artisans selling on Amazon Marketplace are also offering great deals this Bank Holiday.

“With such good weather this year, we know our customers will be looking to squeeze every last drop out of the last few weeks of summer, so we’re pleased to be making our August Bank Holiday Sale bigger than ever. Whether you’re getting the younger kids ready for school, the older ones prepared for University or heading off for a late summer festival, we will have a great deal for everyone this August Bank Holiday to help make those last summer moments count.”
– Doug Gurr, UK Country Manager, Amazon

Are consumers ready for another deal?

Here at Tamebay we’re wondering if consumers are all spent out and if they are ready for another deal event following so closely after Amazon Prime Day and two site wide flash sale events by eBay. Conversely, the number of deals being run by marketplaces is a clear indication of a flat market with the marketplaces doing everything possible to invigorate sales and increase GMV.

Looking back at Amazon Prime Day 2018, we don’t think it was a huge success for Amazon compared to previous events. Whilst Amazon touted it as “the biggest global shopping event in Amazon history”, all they had to say about the UK site was that “Prime Day 2018 was the busiest shopping event of the year so far on Amazon.co.uk”. That’s damned by faint praise as it was their first major shopping event of the year. In previous years they were happy to claim Prime Day as a record breaking sales event bigger than previous Prime Day and Black Friday events.

UK marketplace deal events this summer

Amazon Prime Day – 17th July
eBay UK Flash Sale 10% off site wide – 3rd August
eBay UK Flash Sale 15% off site wide – 17th August
Amazon August Bank Holiday Sale – 22nd to 29th August

With two flash sales already in August, it will be interesting to see if eBay respond with another shopping event over the August Bank Holiday.
