Amazon Scout machine learning shopping experience

Amazon are testing a new way to search – Amazon Scout, a visual search method where liking or disliking items with a thumbs up or thumbs down reveals an alternative selection of products.

Sometimes, say Amazon, you don’t know what you’re looking for until you see it. Like what you love and you’ll see products with the same look and feel, dislike what you don’t and you’ll see something different all in real time. This is an attempt by Amazon to introduce a new inspirational shopping experience where discovery is the key to revealing products from Amazon’s assortment and their third party merchants.

“It is perfect for shoppers who face two common dilemmas: ‘I don’t know what I want, but I’ll know it when I see it’ and ‘I know what I want, but I don’t know what it’s called’.”
– Amazon

Amazon Scout is powered by machine learning and enables customers to browse millions of items and refine their selection based solely on visual attributes.

Currently, in the UK Amazon Scout is limited to a small range of furniture products and you can browse and test the experience here, although Amazon say that more categories are coming. In the US a wider range of categories are available to browse including: Furniture; Home decor; Lighting; Kitchen & dining; Patio; Bedding; and Women’s Shoes.

Amazon Scout is currently being tested on Amazon and on the Amazon App.

  1. With 25K + social media followers you’d think they would give you a heads up prior to the event so you could promote it. I certainly didn’t get an email and if they announced it I must have been sleeping.
