Gumtree comes up trumps again

No primary category set

Yet again Gumtree has come up trumps for me, I ended up with a large laser printer/scanner/copier/fax which is too big and heavy for a standard courier delivery so I listed it on Gumtree. It sold within four hours of listing and I’m dropping it off to the buyer tonight.

I did discover one new thing about Gumtree though, the first time I listed the ad I included a link to the manufacturer’s website for the full specifications. I was given a slap on the wrist and advised that in normal circumstances off site links are frowned upon and that my ad had been removed. The Gumtree T’s and C’s say you can’t link to other classified sites, but I thought my manufacturer link would be allowed.

Selling on eBay I’d normally expect simply to relist the item without the link which I did, but Gumtree appear to have automatically removed my item, then reviewed it and resurrected the listing with no input from me. It makes a pleasant change for a human to review a listing and decide that I wasn’t being too naughty, but if you want to make sure your Gumtree ads go live as speedily as possible don’t include outside links in your ad.

  1. Chris, please, please, please can you tell me how to list on Gumtree?! The site is annoying. For two hours I have tried to list a pair of stiletto shoes – I must have attempted it five times and it keeps deleting my listing and referring me to the general posting rules.

I figured as it was a commercial product that it wanted me to list in Business Services(?) so I tried that and it still deleted my ad – within seconds, so some kind of automation is going on.

The body of the ad said:

“Towering pair of black stiletto sandals with 3 straps and buckles and 8 inch heel balanced by 4 inch front platform.

Brand new! Usually price £49.99 – now only £24.99

You’re welcome to pick up from our storage facility in York, North Yorkshire or we can post Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded for £3.99, or Special Delivery Next Day Guaranteed for £9.99. Please note, Special Delivery items must be paid for before 4pm.”

Followed by a telephone number to call if needed.

    The title described the shoe.

Also in one of our previous Gumtree blogs you advise people to sell on other sites, but doesn’t this break the rules? The rules on Gumtree don’t seem to be very clear 🙁
