Try before you buy on your iPhone

No primary category set

One of eBay’s goals for 2010 was to “Create better experiences through technology driven innovation”. This was highlighted in the Q4 investor call yesterday so it’s worth taking a look at the type of technology eBay are launching.

The latest addition is an update to the iPhone fashion app, with a “See It On” Sunglasses feature. The new technology allows shoppers to virtually ‘try on’ sunglasses before they buy. The iPhone app takes an image which the shopper can align with their face, and they can then select a style and colour sunglasses to see how they will look in real life.

Once the style of sunglasses is chosen the click of a button takes the shopper to eBay and shows a selection of matching sunglasses which they can go ahead and purchase.

I do like this try before you buy technology, in the high street you’d naturally try sunglasses on before you make a purchase so to be able to do the same in a virtual world is a great use of technology.

Other features on the eBay iPhone app are:

  • A Personalised Closet to view your favourite fashion finds in one place
  • An Outfit Builder enabling you to try on items virtually
  • Share your fashion finds with friends for a second opinion
  • A virtual style gallery showcasing the latest trends
  • Easily refined search, allowing you to choose popular categories, or by ‘Buy It Now’ items or auction
