Alibaba ban sale of DVD movies & Games

Alibaba have just banned the sale of optical discs with audio-visual content (Movies, games, TV programs, concerts) on their sites. The ban is due to so many optical discs being proved to infringe copyright. In conjunction with this ban, a review and cleanup of any existing, related listings will be conducted in the coming weeks.

US Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America welcomed the decision saying “I applaud Alibaba’s strategy to stop listing optical discs with audio visual content on their sites to deter the trade of illegal DVDs and Blu-Ray discs”

Banning all audio visual content is unlikely to impact many genuine merchants as generally this type of product has strictly controlled distribution channels. Eradicating counterfeits will do much to enhance Alibaba’s reputation.
