On Facebook you’re one in a billion

It’s a remarkable milestone by any measure: today Facebook have announced that they have one billion active monthly members. 1 in 7 of the human race log in every month to the social networking behemoth.

That means that Facebook has attracted 100 million new active members since April this year and doubled its membership in just over two years. It has also accumulated 1.13 trillion Likes, there are 140 billion friend connections and more than 300 million pictures are uploaded daily.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said in his status update earlier today:
“Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.”

It’s not all cider and skittles at Facebook, though. The IPO earlier this year has not been judged a success and the monetization of Facebook is patchy at best. In particular, it’s difficult to see how they have plugged in to the enormous opportunity of ecommerce. But maybe we’ll just have to wait and see.
