eBay UK clampdown on voucher and coupon sales

After a campaign by the Institute of Promotional Marketing (IPM), eBay will be changing its rules regarding the sale of promotional coupons and vouchers from September.

Not only will eBay UK be prohibiting the sale of vouchers and coupons for free items, but also limiting the number and value of discount vouchers that sellers can list per month.

An eBay spokesperson told Tamebay: “Beginning in September, eBay will be placing limits on the sale of coupons. The updated policy will allow users to sell up to £100 or 25 valid, unexpired original coupons per month and will prohibit the sale of coupons for free items. This policy reflects our commitment to keeping eBay a safe and trusted marketplace and our support for manufacturers and retailers’ efforts to ensure consumer compliance with coupon redemption rules.”

Charles D’Oyly of the IPM said: “These new eBay guidelines are a breakthrough in the IPM’s campaign to get the message across that money-off coupons should not be misused. It’s in the interests of manufacturers, retailers and consumers alike that coupons and vouchers should be used responsibly. We believe the new guidelines will help to ensure that coupons and vouchers remain highly effective tools for UK marketers and continue to save consumers money.”
