eBay sellers will no longer be able to accept payments using Skrill, PropPay or Paymate come September 27th. This is unlikely to affect many UK sellers but it might have an impact on some of our US readers.
An email sent to sellers using the services said: “Over the course of this year, eBay has conducted a global review of the use of payment methods on its websites. Given the very low usage of ProPay and Skrill on eBay’s various sites, from the week of Sept. 27, 2015, these payment methods will no longer be supported. Please revise the payment methods offered on Good ‘Til Cancelled listings to avoid them being taken down 30 days from their initial listing date.”
eBay gave a statement to Tamebay: “After a global review of current payment methods on eBay’s sites, we have decided to retire Propay, Skrill and Paymate due to low usage (far less than 1% of users). Customers will have at least 30 days to make the necessary changes to an alternative payment method.”
Under the 5-year operating agreement between eBay and PayPal, the newly independent eBay is required to process 80% of gross merchandise volume (GMV) must go through PayPal or eBay will face penalties. On the flip side, if eBay exceeds 80% through PayPal, it gets a bonus.
