Amazon has confirmed that it will be opening a new Amazon Fulfillment Centre (FC) in Coventry on the site of the former Jaguar plant in Browns Lane. The 40k square metre facility will be the size of 18 football pitches.
Amazon’s Director of UK Customer Fulfilment, Stefano Perego, said: “The new site will be our first dedicated receive centre in the UK and we look forward to collect applications from people interested in receiving competitive pay and comprehensive benefits from day one, working at Amazon.”
The site was home to Jaguar production until they moved to Castle Bromwich in 2005.
The FC will employ 800 full time staff including engineers, IT specialists and warehouse operators when it opens later in 2017. But the headcount is expected to number 1600 in due course. Part of the plan is to expand the car parking at the site to capacity for 700 cars and 127 heavy goods vehicles.
The development will hopefully prove to be a boost to jobs in the area and a filip for the local economy but planner received 106 objections to the plans. Among the criticisms were fears that it would harm the local environment and complaints that the site wasn’t to be used for housing or a manufacturing facility.
