You may need a TV Licence with the launch of Amazon Channels

Amazon have launched Amazon Channels in the UK and Germany. Amazon Channels allows Amazon Prime members to add channel subscriptions for a low monthly fee without the need to sign up for a bundle or enter a lengthy contract.

Amazon Channels are available as individual subscriptions costing between £1.49 and £6.99 per channel per month with anytime cancellation. The proposition includes a range of premium and genre TV channel subscriptions, live TV and on-demand and free trials on the majority of subscriptions.

One thing you do need to be aware of, once you start adding live subscriptions you’re obliged to have a TV Licence in the UK. It’s the same if you watch BBC iPlayer live – catch up TV services don’t need a licence which (for colour) currently costs £147.00 pa.

This is potentially a real money spinner for Amazon – you wouldn’t have to subscribe to too many channels to be paying more than your Amazon Prime subscription costs in the first place. The hook is the convenience of being able to watch a ton of extra content through a single account on any device that you own – no more watching the Grand Tour on Amazon, then ITV hub on your Apple iOS device and then switch to Sky to watch Discovery.

It’s no real surprise to see Amazon wanting to keep you on Amazon regardless of whether you’re shopping, reading, saving your photos or in this case watching TV. You can sign up to ITV Hub+ on the ITV website for £3.99 and it’ll cost exactly the same to sign up to watch it on Amazon. The difference is that it’s that little bit more of your life billed by Amazon and tying you in to their brand – Once you’ve got a Prime account they want to make it indispensable and more important to you than just the free one-day shipping which is why most people sign up in the first place.

Sellers take note – we’re constantly hearing that Amazon is one of the fastest growing channels and (sadly for those that resist using it) FBA (or seller fulfilled FBA) accelerates your Amazon business even faster. If you’re still not using FBA it’s worth at least trialling it for some of your best sellers just to check the difference in sell through rates.
