Amazon Basics now offers over 1700 products

No primary category set

The Amazon Basics range was launched in 2009. It was billed as a range of generic, private label goods under the Amazon brand but it’s obvious now that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of goods Amazon Basics sells. And the range has moved beyond what might be considered as ‘basics’.

You can check out the UK Amazon Basics range here.

Amazon said recently of its Basics range: “a private label collection of consumer electronic ‘basics’ created for customers who want exceptional value. Since then, we’ve expanded to more than a dozen categories including Household Supplies and Sporting Goods.”

And when you look at the Amazon Basics range it’s clear that electronics items are still key to the concept and things like cables and batteries are the top sellers. But there some interesting, perhaps surprising, lines such as kitchen appliances and office chairs now available. There is a range of bags and luggage and also bed linen and towels.

Why is this important? It’s a timely reminder that Amazon doesn’t just host a marketplace for sellers to trade on but it’s also a retailer in its own right, selling products. And the Basics range is also significant because these private label goods are exactly the sort of items an Amazon seller might source themselves to retail. Basics is a competitor.

And it seems likely that Amazon will be developing the range further and selling more items in more categories.

As a seller, have you been affected by the growing range of goods in the Amazon Basics range and has it impacted your business?

One Response

  1. Retailers make good money from selling their own branded goods as the profit can be anywhere from %30 to %300. I expect that Amazon will be rapidly expanding its own branded goods over the coming years. Amazon has all the data on what consumers are buying and are interested in. With that data Amazon brands its own goods and sells them on its website under cutting the competition.
