Several readers have been in touch to tell Tamebay that Shopify had some problems on Thursday evening. It seems like the supplier had an outage of some kind that meant that ecommerce websites were not available for a period and shoppers couldn’t make purchases. That will have had an impact on businesses but it doesn’t seem like the problem persisted for long.
Shopify provided a series of updates on their website and as they noted:
We’re experiencing an interruption in service, causing some stores to be inaccessible. We’re working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and will keep you updated.
– Shopify
It looks like the problem existed for around half an hour and was resolved swiftly by the webstore provider. We don’t know how widespread the problem was but one correspondent, who manages multiple stores, told us that all the stores under his purview were non-operational for a period this evening and that suggests the issue was possibly universal. Let us know if you were impacted.
It’s worth remarking upon how the problem was dealt with. Shopify communicated the problem swiftly and provided regular updates, as long as you knew where to look. (Shopify users would be well advised to bookmark the system status board for future reference.)
And honesty counts for a lot. Problems will always happen. But it is how problems are approached and dealt with that counts. Open communication and rapid resolution matters and it is obvious that Shopify succeeded on both accounts this time in the face of a wobble. Well done.
