New Walmart Image Dimensions for fashion from 21st April

No primary category set

Walmart have announced preparation for a new fashion experience on Walmart.com although they’ve not revealed details. What they have announced is that all your images will likely need to be reformatted to the new Walmart Image Dimensions requirements as they are changing from a 1:1 square ratio standard to a new 3:4 portrait requirement.

This is likely to mean that if you sell fashion on Walmart you will need to produce a separate set of images specifically for this marketplace. The deadline to upload new images is the 21st of April 2018 so there are less then three weeks to go before you need to have edited all your product shots. This will only apply to you if you uploaded images to Walmart – if you’re using their studio capture images then they’ll do the work.

Walmart have specifically stated that simply resizing images using distortion to fit the new scale is NOT acceptable. Images that don’t fit nicely in a 3:4 ratio should be centered in the middle of the image (except for shoes which should be centered near the bottom of the image).

“To support the fresh experience and avoid distorted images, all impacted fashion images need to be replaced with ones that have been modified to portrait mode and that meet minimum resolution requirements.”

Deadline to meet Walmart Image Dimensions requirements

After the 21st of April, any of your items without correctly formatted images may simply be unpublished from Walmart.com meaning no more sales.

Affected Walmart Categories

All items listed in Men’s Apparel; Women’s Apparel; Kid’s Apparel; Baby Apparel; Jewelry; Watches; Shoes; Accessories; and Travel/Luggage are required to be in portrait mode.

It should be noted that so long as your items meet the minimum dimensions, it’s the aspect ratio of 3:4 that is important – images can be larger so long as they are portrait and the correct ratio.

Editing images to avoid reshooting

If your images are all 2000 x 2000 pixels, you may be able to crop or trim them in a batch to 1500 x 2000 (assuming your items don’t fill the width of your photos). Another option is to add white space at the top and bottom by increasing the size of the underlying canvas.
