Shopify shares some Black Friday stats

The Canadian based ecommerce platform Shopify has reported some interesting figures related to the performance of its merchants on Black Friday. The aggregated sales information shows some notable trends. But they readily admit that not too much significance should be applied to this information:

This year Shopify is releasing insights into sales data from their 600,000 plus merchants. While this is metadata, it still is an interesting look at what and where SMB merchants are selling.
– Shopify

  • Merchants generated over $573 million USD in total sales during Black Friday
  • At their peak, merchants generated over $870,000 USD sales per minute during Black Friday
  • Shopify merchants generated over $37 million USD sales per hour at the peak during Black Friday
  • Mobile shopping continues to exceed desktop, with 63% of orders coming from either phones or tablets, and desktop sales making up 37%.
  • Before 2:30 PM EST, 2018 Black Friday Shopify GMV surpassed the total Shopify GMV of Black Friday 2017.
  • $86.37 was the average shopping cart order price during Black Friday
  • 18.39% of orders will be shipped cross-border (internationally) during Black Friday

Top 10 purchasing cities in the world on Black Friday were:

  • New York
  • London
  • Los Angeles
  • Brooklyn
  • Chicago
  • Houston
  • Toronto
  • San Francisco
  • Portland
  • San Diego

The first takeaway from these numbers is that Shopify, and the merchants that power their webshops with the technology, continue to grow. And that should be seen as a positive by any merchant considering using the service. It was predicted that Shopify would suffer once Magento was acquired by Adobe but that hasn’t come to pass.

The data also points towards how this well-known provider is a successful supplier for merchants who are keen on cross border trade and selling and shipping to buyers overseas. Of course, London makes the top ten city list largely by dint of its size. But 18% international trade is much higher than the average.

Do you use the service and how do you rate what they have to offer?
