Amazon New York headquarters reconsidered over political opposition

Amazon New York headquarters look set to be reconsidered after facing a wave of political opposition. The marketplace’s executives have had a discussion to rethink their plans for New York and consider alternatives.

We previously reported on the new Amazon HQ2 campus which will see more than 25,000 employees working at the headquarter.

The marketplace’s expansion plan comes to face with criticism from two Seattle city councillors. The main concerns are that 25k new paid jobs could have a significant impact on the city and the cost should come to the municipal coffers to pay for new facilities. January saw the US State Senate nominating an outspoken Amazon critic to a state board where he could veto the project.

Amazon haven’t made any specific plans to change the headquarter’s location. In a statement to CNN on the news, Amazon reassures the situation in New York. However, the marketplace could easily abandon the project or change the location as they haven’t purchased or leased the space for new corporate headquarters.

We’re focused on engaging with our new neighbours — small business owners, educators, and community leaders. Whether it’s building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbour we will be.”
