Amazon set eyes on students with miniscule Prime fee

Amazon.com have set their sights on wooing students to join Prime membership with the introduction of a minuscule fee for Amazon Music subscription, making a bid on leveraging hard-to-resist services to build loyalty.

Amazon announced a new but timely music benefit for Prime Student members as younger shoppers get ready to head to campus.

The move serves as a proof of Amazon’s long-established approach of outmanoeuvring the competition by offering services and products at a competitive price. It is directed at cultivating a pool of loyal members who are more likely to purchase goods from Amazon by getting benefits.

The value of exchange sees shoppers coming back to Amazon to take advantage of the “free” accelerated delivery service coupled with the perks of music and video streaming services and more. Merchants are also getting their slice of cake by enjoying the exposure of a larger pool of customers which come to check out the marketplace’s offering, increasing their chances to bag sales.

The “incredibly low price” bargain allows members to access to more than 50 million songs and the latest releases for an additional $0.99 (£0.82) per month. However, Amazon say those who wish to take advantage of the offering need to have a Prime Student account, which is a £39 per year or £3.99 per month in the UK – half of what Prime subscribers pay – which is £79.00 a year or £7.99 a month. College students who haven’t yet tried Prime Student can also sign up for a six-month trial at this page.

To hear chart-topping hits across genres, customers can access Alexa in the Amazon Music App for iOS or Android, and on all Alexa-enabled devices. To begin streaming a variety of top Amazon Music global playlists featuring the latest in hip-hop, pop hits and more, try asking:

  • “Alexa, play Rap Rotation,” to listen to the recently-launched, new home for hip-hop in heavy rotation
