eBay show green colours with accelerated sustainability drive

eBay are accelerating their drive towards a sustainable business model with a planned launch of their two ‘green’ campuses.

Last week saw Amazon ‘showing their colours’ with an announcement of their new eco-friendly initiatives ahead of the Global Climate Stike. Amazon revealed their four-pronged sustainable pledges that are set to take the marketplace towards 100% net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, renewable energy by 2024, 100% renewable energy by 2030 and 50% of their shipments to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The same day saw eBay taking a similar manoeuvre. The move aimed at driving en route to entirely carbon-free solar, wind and geothermal energy by the end of September – will see eBay’s two San Jose campuses—which includes eBay’s global headquarters – championing their eco-friendly commitment in partnership with 100% renewable generation service provider, TotalGreen.

“Operating in an environmentally and socially sustainable way is paramount to eBay’s operations and commitment to responsible business.

“The City of San Jose has been eBay’s home for nearly 25 years, and we are thrilled to partner with San Jose Clean Energy to achieve 100% renewable energy for our offices here.”
– Wendy Jones, SVP, Global Operations, eBay.

The move marks the marketplace’s goal to source 100% renewable electricity at eBay-controlled data centres and offices by 2025 and honours their commitment as a member of RE100. The San Jose campuses are the fifth eBay location to move entirely to renewable energy sourcing, joining Draper, Utah, Dreilinden, Germany, Dublin, Ireland, and Portland, Oregon.

In addition to being members of RE100, which is a corporate leadership initiative led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, eBay are also a member of the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), a standalone membership organisation to support non-utility, nonresidential renewable procurement, and a longtime member of the Future of Internet Power, an initiative that brings together companies to address challenges and collaborate on solutions that will enhance the ability to procure renewable energy to power data centers.

Further underscoring their sustainability commitment, this year eBay is “proud” to be named to the 2019 Dow Jones Sustainability World and North America Indices and celebrate DJSI’s 20th-anniversary providing sustainability and ESG performance to investors.

“We are thrilled to be included in this renowned list of sustainability leaders, and look forward to continuing to champion sustainability initiatives.”
