Yodel employee Gill Kelly celebrates 40 year company milestone

Gill Kelly, a parcel sorter from Shaw, has hit her 40 year anniversary with UK independent parcel carrier Yodel, an amazing achievement in this day and age where job mobility has become the norm. Gill isn’t even thinking of quitting yet, taking all the technology that’s entered the business over the years in her stride, she’s set a goal to complete a full 50 years working with the company which would make for a truely extraordinary career.

Yodel estimate that, over the last 40 years, Gill has played a role in the safe delivery of over a million parcels. She has been working for Yodel in the North West since she was just 18, and initially started by loading parcels at the Falcon Centre in Chadderton, before moving to Earl Mill in Oldham.

Since 1999 Gill has been based at Yodel’s sort on Linney Lane in Shaw. Her role on the ‘inbound’ team involves scanning barcodes on parcels as they arrive at the sort from Yodel’s retail partners. The scan starts the tracking process, which allows customers to see where their order is on its journey. The machines then automatically sort the parcels, ready to be transported to Yodel’s nationwide network of depots, where they are loaded onto vans for onward delivery to customers and CollectPlus’ click and collect Points.

“The team at Shaw are like a family, we all look to help each other. I’ve even been on holiday with one of my colleagues, which is testament to the togetherness at the sort centre. My next goal is to reach a half century with Yodel!

When I started, we used to have to write down the number of parcels manually on a piece of paper, but the technology now makes the process much simpler. Nowadays, I scan parcel barcodes as they come in and the computer tracks them. To see how far the technology has changed in the time I’ve been here is remarkable.”

To celebrate her anniversary, Yodel’s chief operations officer, Carl Moore, presented Gill with a £750 voucher, and her colleagues gave her gifts of flowers, prosecco and chocolates.

“Gill is a highly valued member of the team at Shaw. Her experience and dedication, combined with her approachable and friendly demeanour, make her a hugely popular member of the team and we thank her for long service.”

  1. Its nice that its been recognised, but £750 is rather stingy! Especially when the owners family is worth >£7bn…

I really hope that when she retires she gets a very healthy send off.

In my industry one of the medium sized brands (5% of the size of Yodel) recognised one of their staff members service (40yrs) by buying her a £50k Motorhome for her and her husband to use during her retirement.
