Amazon has announced it it will open its first customer service centre in Colombia this October. The retailer and marketplace will establish the facility in the country’s capital Bogotá as the ecommerce titan continues to expand in South and Latin America.

They say that they plan to hire 600 employees by the end of the year and 400 by October. The new service centre will provide 24/7 customer support to Amazon customers worldwide in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

We are delighted to invest this year in Bogotá and to work with such qualified people in Colombia who will bring high levels of experience and passion for their work. Amazon’s customer service is dedicated to supporting and responding to the needs of our customers day and night. I could not be happier to launch this site in Colombia, and therefore be part of our global network.
– Tom Weiland, vice president of global customer service, Amazon

Officials in Colombia have welcomed the move and it is hoped that Amazon’s investment will be a spur for further development and attract other big tech and internet names to Bogota.

The arrival of this type of investment represents the transfer of technology and knowledge, generating greater competition and confidence because companies like Amazon bring with them the possibility of attracting world-class companies and demand for Colombian services.
– José Manuel Restrepo, Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Tourism, Colombia

And this is another example of Amazon investing in the Americas south of the United States. They have also recently launched Alexa in Mexico and recently opened fulfilment centres in Brazil. Expect to hear more soon.
