Read the eBay Managed Payments terms and conditions

This week a great deal more information about eBay Managed Payments has emerged. This follows the news from earlier in the week that saw eBay president and CEO Devin Wenig announce that the first payment on eBay had made using the new ‘intermediated’ system. We wrote about that here: 1st successful eBay Managed Payments transaction takes place.

Now an eagle-eyed eBay merchant has found the Terms and Conditions under which eBay Managed Payments will operate. You can read them in full here. (We give you the best fun.) Whilst there is a great deal of interest, there are also some startling omissions. For instance, there is no clear exposition of the fees eBay will be paying for payments.

The nature of the fees is doubtless one of the biggest unanswered questions about the new payments system on eBay and rumours are rife. As Tamebay has said before, the new system offers an opportunity to reduce total overall fees.

There is, however, information about chargeback fees for eBay sellers:

Chargeback Fees
Upon the conclusion of a chargeback investigation and/or re-presentment that results in a seller being found responsible for the chargeback amounts, we charge a $20 chargeback fee, excluding any applicable sales tax, for each chargeback. Sellers may appeal the chargeback fee within 30 days from when we invoice the chargeback fee if they believe that they have been charged in error.

The question is the extent to which these represent the final terms. It is most likely that, as the testing phase continues, they will change and develop. Indeed, one amendment has already been added. Perhaps the most heartening aspect is that merchants anywhere outside of the USA just need to keep a watching brief on this testing phase until some point in 2019. eBay has confirmed the new system won’t be going international until some time next year.

But that is only a temporary stay of execution. The global roll out will happen by 2021 and the new system will be compulsory for all merchants. If you take a moment to read the new terms, do leave a comment if you find anything of interest that other readers should be appraised of.
