eBay’s Big Charity Sell has launched today to help raise vital funds for charity and reduce fly tipping. The nation can now sell their unwanted items on eBay and donate up to 100% of the proceeds to a charity of their choice.

One in five fly tipping during COVID-19
If you’re one those who openly admitted to fly tipping you’ll no longer need to resort to this bad habit thanks to eBay’s big charity sell.
According to eBay UK an estimated £51 million worth of unwanted items are going to waste through fly tipping outside closed charity shops. Over half of the nation have been using lockdown to spring clean their homes. Eight in 10 of these people claimed to have taken unwanted items to a physical charity shop and one in five people have openly admitting to fly tipping in a bid to rid unwanted items from their homes.
“eBay data released today also reveals that the average UK home is sitting on 42 unwanted items, worth an estimated £2,600. The online marketplace hopes its new campaign will help inspire the nation to declutter for good and prevent an alternative (sic) to flytipping, by selling unwanted items via eBay UK and choosing to donate up to 100% of the sale to charity. From 10-100%, sellers simply check the box that says “Donate a portion to charity” and select the percentage they want to donate.”

£2600 / 42 = £61.90 average per item for a UK home! Pull the other one! Better to dispose of it responsibly in a licenced facility or proper channel and donate a few quid to charity rather than spend valuable personal time trying to fill eBay’s coffers. Always wary of these initiatives as I am sure they send them a nice big fat cheque and expect the tax relief to come to them offset against their profits. What great PR as well to say geeezz what a great company we are we donated £xxx quid to charity as a company. No mention of the seller to the taxman there then? What a wheeze!
Fly tipping is junk waste / rubbish / scrap that should be disposed of in a proper dump!
