Romanian police arrest 70 in “eBay scam” raids

Romanian police yesterday arrested 70 people suspected of involvement in eBay and internet fraud. The suspects are alleged to be members of three gangs which used phished eBay logins to list luxury items for sale on the site. Buyers paid for luxury items such as Rolex watches and sports cars, but received no goods in return. Simultaneous raids in the Czech Republic saw another 10 suspects arrested.

Romanian police say that since 2006, more than 800 victims have been identified, mostly from western Europe, the US, Canada and New Zealand: their combined losses total around €800,000. A video showing one of the raids was posted to YouTube:
