Amazon have just launched Amazon Italy, bring the number of country specific sites they operate in up to eight. Other countries are Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and the USA.
Amazon Italy already has two million Italian and foreign language books, more than 450,000 CDs and more than 120,000 DVDs as well as video games, music, consumer electronics, software and toys. This is a bigger selection with more categories than any other Amazon site at launch.
In a welcome letter on the home page of Amazon Italy Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon, welcomes Italian buyers. He says the first order shipped to Italy from Amazon was on the 3rd August 2005 and since then millions of orders have been shipped to Italy, but this is the first time Italians have been able to order on their own country specific site.
To mark the launch buyers on Amazon Italy are being offered discounts of up to 30% on most books as well as the opportunity to sign up for Amazon Prime which gives free 2-3 day shipping for a very low annual fee of just €9.99 (In the UK Amazon Prime is next day delivery and costs £49.00 per year). Amazon Italy are offering a one month free trial to Amazon Prime and for customers who don’t sign up for the service shipping is still free for all orders over €19.00. Amazon Italy will ship as standard for free to Italy, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican City.
