India to have 165 million mobile net users by 2015

Even more staggering information that the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) are continuing to be the growth powerhouse of ecommerce has emerged from India.

A report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) predicts that by March 2015 165 million Indians will access the web through mobile devices and dongles.

To give you a sense of the speed of this growth, in December 2012 the same could be said of 87.1 million. And looking back to March 2009, only 4.1 million people in India had access to the internet at all. The population of India is roughly 1 billion.

Staggering growth aside, what’s not clear is how this might impact ecommerce. The report notes that email, social networking services (SNS) and message surfaces, as well as online video, were key activities but no mention is made of ecommerce.
