Are eBay changing their search algorithms?

No primary category set

Auction with BINI’ve had a couple of people mention recently that sales patterns on eBay seem to be variable. Normally that’s indicative of only one thing, eBay are testing or changing the way items are surfaced in search results.

The latest tip comes from , he spotted what appears to be an unusually high number of Auctions with BIN (Buy It Now) option in search results. You’ll only notice them on a search which you restrict to Buy It Now items only, but there are a lot of auctions in there.

From checking a few searches what’s most apparent is that a lot of newly listed Auction with BIN option are getting to the top of search results. If you’re not currently listing in Auction format it may be worth experimenting with, even if a buyer narrows their search to fixed price offers they’ll still see your auction so long as you add the BIN listing enhancement.

Have you seen any fluctuations in sales which could suggest eBay are tinkering with search results, or has nothing changed and we’ve only just spotted the high proportion of newly listed auctions in fixed price search results?

If you sell in Auction format and you habitually add the BIN option let us know if you’ve seen an increase in sales.

  1. yes I have notice an important change: if I increase the price, I have a better rank in ‘Best Match”. Before, it was the opposite: the cheapest was best best place in “Best Match”. And I think it is a good idea, because ebay promotes quality over cheaper items.

  2. Over the past few weeks and months it does seem the rules have been changed a little, weighting has been changed on past sales by the look of it and a few other things.

  3. Something has certainly happened to “Best Match” search and its meant that where once my items were very high up in the categories I list they are now a bit all over the place.

I’m hoping its a bit of a bug that will be fixed as that’s happened before. My sales have been really down this week as a result

  4. Thanks for mentioning this Chris, I thought at the time when I mentioned it that it was probably just a glitch, a week later it’s still happening.

One example, an Auction + Bin with no bids is currently appearing higher in BIN Best Match search than a product of ours with 37 sales at £349.99 a pop.

    A tad annoying.

I may have a play later with auctions+bin listings but it’s not really something we won’t to get into, eBay have been telling us for years now they want us selling new products sold with BIN with fast shipping, now what? second hand baths with soap scum and body hair in the plug hole?

  5. It’s an auction with bin. no bids. £20 start with a £75 bin. 5 days to go. second hand. collection only. 😐
