How badly has the stormy weather affected ecommerce?

I’m fairly thankful that here down in Brighton, that while we’ve taken a bit of a battering, and the old pier is rather the worse off, we have escaped the worst of the weather effects that have proved so grim elsewhere.

How’s it been down your way and has it affected how you’re running your business?

eBay have said in an announcement that: “Royal Mail has announced that some services have been affected by the extreme weather conditions in the UK. Due to high winds and heavy rainfall, there has been disruption to a number of air, rail and road services.

As a result of this buyers and sellers should be aware of potential delays in the delivery of mail. We advise eBay sellers to maintain open communication with buyers and advise buyers that there will probably be delays to their purchases arriving.”

And Royal Mail have got some pretty detailed information on what has been affected on their service update pages.

How have you been faring in this stormy weather?

  1. Hopefully the worst of the Winter is now behind us and with a few weeks of dry weather the floods will be going down.

Down here in my part of Cornwall we are about 300 foot above Sea Level and only about 9 miles from the Sea. So the heavy rain does not hang around for long. So for me the Winter has not really affected business.

But I find myself wondering about our Potential Customers across the Country. As an example the Thames Valley and the Severn Valley. Both of these are heavily populated areas and there are many communities that are close enough to the River that they could be subject to flooding. Some may already have been flooded and others have spent worrying weeks watching the water levels and hoping that it does not rise another few inches or a foot or so because then they could be in trouble.

It might not be us the sellers who have had troubles but what about our potential customers. Will they be buying if the floods could still affect them. Now that the water levels are dropping perhaps they will now come out to buy again.
